From June 13 to September 28, 2025, the Palace of Versailles presents a unique exhibition celebrating the artistry of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. At its heart is the iconic marble bust of Louis XIV, created in 1665 and regarded as one of the finest baroque portraits ever made.
Displayed in the Dauphine’s Apartment, the bust is brought down from its usual elevated position in the Salon de Diane, allowing visitors to admire its details up close. Every feature – from the flowing curls and piercing gaze to the subtle facial expressions and rich drapery – reflects Bernini’s unmatched ability to combine regal grandeur with lifelike presence.
The exhibition explores the sculptor’s journey to Paris, the political and cultural context of the commission, and the interplay between Italian baroque and French classicism. A thoughtful display design, including tactile elements, invites all audiences to experience the work not only as a masterpiece of art but as a vivid encounter with the Sun King himself.

Bernini Up Close – A Revelation
An unforgettable experience. Seeing Bernini’s bust of Louis XIV at eye level is completely different from viewing it from afar. The detail is astonishing – you can almost feel the texture of the hair and fabric. The exhibition’s historical context was clear and engaging. Highly recommended for art lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
A Hidden Gem in Versailles
I’ve visited Versailles before, but this exhibition was something special. The intimacy of being so close to the sculpture made me appreciate Bernini’s genius even more. The mix of visual and tactile elements showed real care for accessibility. It’s a short visit compared to the main palace, but absolutely worth it.
A Masterpiece in the Spotlight
A rare chance to see a masterpiece up close. The lighting, the explanations, and the flow of the exhibition were perfect. I learned a lot about the relationship between French and Italian art during Louis XIV’s reign. It’s a gem within the grandeur of Versailles – don’t miss it if you’re here this summer.
